Harness today added an artificial intelligence (AI) coding offering to its portfolio after revealing it acquired select assets from Augment Code.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Harness Cosmos Software Factory is based on Cosmos, a set of AI coding agents, an Auggie command line interface (CLI), a Code Context Engine and other related technologies originally developed by Augment Code. Collectively, that platform provides access to a set of AI agents running on isolated virtual machines that are able to first create a plan to address a requirement, write and test the code created and then open a pull request. When a reviewer comments or a check fails, an agent fixes the issue on the same pull request.<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, the Code Context Engine maintains a live map of the codebase, with requests routed to the AI model best suited to complete the task. Shared memory carries lessons from each review into the next change, with built-in versioning and budget controls being automatically applied.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harness CEO Jyoti Bansal said this addition to the company\u2019s product portfolio will provide DevOps teams with a specification-driven AI coding platform that will become more tightly integrated with the Harness continuous integration\/continuous delivery (CI\/CD) platform. That capability will prove crucial because much of the code being developed using AI coding tools lacks the context needed to be deployed in a production environment, he added. <\/span><\/p>\n

The DevOps bottleneck has shifted downstream in the AI era, said Bansal. The overall goal is to provide DevOps teams with an integrated set of tools and platforms that spans the entire software development lifecycle (SDLC), said Bansal.<\/span><\/p>\n

As is the case with the entire Harness portfolio, DevOps teams will have the option of deploying the Harness Cosmos Software Factory or opting to use other AI coding tools. Alternatively, DevOps teams can opt to deploy the Harness Cosmos Software Factory alongside other CI\/CD platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, as AI coding continues to evolve, it\u2019s becoming apparent that tools and platforms that are integrated across the SDLC will generate higher quality code that is more likely to run in a specific production environment, said Bansal. In contrast, a general-purpose AI coding tool lacks the context needed to generate code that will run in the unique production environment that most DevOps teams manage, he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harness will provide DevOps teams with a set of existing AI agents developed by Harness that can verify, validate, test and secure the code generated by the AI agents that are embedded in the Harness Cosmos Software Factory, said Bansal. Harness Cosmos, in effect, manages test cases and security requirements while reasoning about previous incidents and their remediations to create code, while the AI agents developed by Harness reason about dependencies, risk, and validation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The end result is an AI portfolio that spans the entire application development process from idea to code using a Code Context Engine developed by Augment Code and a Software Delivery Knowledge Graph created by Harness, said Bansal.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear how far down the path toward agentic engineering DevOps teams are today. Most are making extensive use of AI coding tools. The next challenge, of course, is to deploy an AI platform that not only generates code but also tests, validates and deploys it on a truly end-to-end basis.<\/span><\/p>\n
