A global survey of 839 IT decision-makers conducted by the Futurum Group finds 54% now work for organizations that use AI across more than half of their software development lifecycle<\/a> (SDLC), with 40% reporting AI already generates the majority of production code merged in the last 90 days. Within the next three years, a total of 58% expect AI to build 80% or more of their software, the survey finds.<\/p>\n

However, three-quarters of survey respondents (75%) have encountered a production issue that they have confirmed is attributable to AI, with 42% experiencing multiple incidents.<\/p>\n

More challenging still, only 43% mandate human review of AI-generated code and just 18% standardized or mastered AI agent governance, the survey finds. At present, most DevOps teams appear to be in the early stages of adopting agentic AI engineering. The percentage of organizations that have adopted autonomous and semi-autonomous agents stands at 19%, the survey finds.<\/p>\n

On the plus side, DevOps teams expect total spend to grow about 14% in 2027, and 72% plan to significantly increase investment (41%) or slightly increase spending (31%) over the next 12 months. The Futurum Group now projects global spending on software lifecycle engineering tools will roughly double, to $226 billion by 2030, up from $111.1 billion in 2025. Spending on agent control planes and agentic development will compound at 48.7% and 45.1%, respectively, through 2030, according to the report. Nearly 45% of that spending flows through third-party vendors and partners.<\/p>\n

Mitch Ashley, vice president and practice lead for software lifecycle engineering at the Futurum Group<\/a>, said that as AI-assisted coding tools become mainstream, DevOps teams are now scrutinizing the amount of value being generated per developer.<\/p>\n

DevOps teams are looking at the degree to which the output generated by AI coding tools is holding up in production, he added. Vendors that can\u2019t prove that will lose the renewal conversation, noted Ashley.<\/p>\n

Overall, software development has never been more crucial to organizations, with nearly 60% of organizations tying more than a quarter of their revenue to internally developed applications.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, roughly two-thirds of development time (64%) is being allocated to maintaining and modernizing existing software rather than building new features and applications.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear at what pace AI is driving a renaissance in software engineering, but it is clear that just about every task is now subject to some level of additional automation. The issue right now is that the volume of code being generated by AI coding tools is starting to overwhelm DevOps pipelines. Too much of the code finding its way into production environments is of uncertain quality. The end result is that in some cases the amount of technical debt that DevOps teams are carrying forward is actually increasing.<\/p>\n

The challenge now is optimizing DevOps workflows in a way that enables DevOps teams to more easily review code before it is deployed in a production environment. After all, it only takes a handful of incidents to wipe out all the benefits that might otherwise have accrued from being able to safely and more consistently push higher-quality code faster than ever into production environments.<\/p>\n
