At present, Builderbot executes more than 200,000 operations per day and merges approximately 1,500 pull requests per week, about 15% of all production code changes made across the entire Block application development environment.

Designed to be accessed via the Slack messaging platform, Builderbot is at the core of agentic AI engineering workflows that have enabled the provider of various application services to accelerate the pace at which software for its Square point-of-sale (PoS) platform is built, deployed and updated using a smaller number of application developers.

Bradley Axen, principal engineer for data and machine learning at Block, said the company currently relies on multiple AI models, including offerings from Anthropic and OpenAI, to build software, with AI agents opting to use any given model based on the task assigned and any performance and cost tradeoffs that might need to be made.

Anyone can tag Builderbot with a short description of what they need, which is then processed directly within the Slack thread to eliminate context switching between tools and AI agents. Builderbot picks up tickets directly from Linear and Jira project management software, creates the branch, writes the code, opens the pull request, observes the continuous integration (CI) workflows and iterates based on feedback from a developer. It operates on source code and system configuration only, which means customer data, payment information, or personally identifiable information is never accessed.

Additionally, Block has set up adversarial relationships between agents, using models to review and optimize code before deploying it. Collectively, those capabilities enable Block to create a self-reinforcing set of agentic workflows based on AI agents that all have their own unique set of harnesses, noted Axen. The next major challenge will be to further explore collaboration spanning AI agents that are automating tasks across multiple projects and teams, he added.

Block is sharing how it is extending the goose orchestration framework to encourage other software engineering teams to adopt and contribute to the open source project. Of course, there are other options for orchestrating AI agents across a SDLC and the level of AI maturity differs markedly from one organization to another. However, the one thing that is certain is that rather than if, the question now is increasingly becoming when and to what degree to embed AI agents deeper into DevOps workflows as the pace at which applications are being built, deployed and updated in the AI era only continues to accelerate.

<a
