As of June 16, the feature is closed to new customers. If your organization hasn’t used it before, you won’t see it and won’t be able to start.

For existing users, nothing changes yet. Existing customers with active usage can continue using the playground, API, and models as usual. But GitHub has made the direction clear: this is the first step toward full retirement, and more details on timelines are coming.

What GitHub Models Were

When GitHub launched the feature two years ago, the pitch was straightforward. It gave developers free access to AI models, including Meta’s Llama 3.1, OpenAI’s GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini, Cohere’s Command, and Mistral Large 2, directly in GitHub. Developers could test prompts, compare models, and experiment without setting up separate accounts or infrastructure.

GitHub Models brought AI directly into the developer workflow by providing access to multiple leading models through a single API key. It allowed teams to manage prompts as code, run side-by-side model evaluations, and move from testing to production within the same environment they already use.

The appeal was low friction. GitHub Models provides free access to a set of AI models for anyone with a GitHub account, making it significantly easier to become familiar with them without creating Azure resources or downloading models from Hugging Face.

The Handoff to Azure AI Foundry

For new projects that require access to AI models, GitHub directs developers to Azure AI Foundry, which offers a broad model catalog.

The shift isn’t surprising. GitHub Models was always positioned as a starting point, not a production platform. The original design included a natural off-ramp: experiment in GitHub, then move to Azure when you were ready to scale. GitHub is now formalizing that path and consolidating AI tooling under the Azure AI Foundry umbrella.

For developers already deep in the GitHub/Azure ecosystem, the migration should be manageable. But for teams that relied on GitHub Models specifically because it didn’t require Azure credentials or billing setup, there’s now additional friction. Azure AI Foundry is a more capable platform, but it’s also a heavier lift to onboard — and it’s not free.

What This Means for Developer Teams

Mitch Ashley, VP and practice lead for software lifecycle engineering and AI-native software engineering at The Futurum Group, sees this as more than a feature sunset. “Model experimentation is moving out of the repository where developers work and back behind cloud provisioning,” Ashley said. “The change separates assisted coding from model evaluation as a billable platform service, with Azure AI Foundry owning where teams compare and select models.”

That separation has real consequences for how teams approach model selection going forward. “Teams that used the account-free surface to keep model choice empirical must now decide where evaluation lives,” Ashley said. “For smaller teams and independent developers, model selection becomes a cloud-procurement decision again, and side-by-side evaluation either migrates to Foundry or erodes.”

That’s the part worth sitting with. GitHub Models let teams treat model comparison as a quick, no-cost step in the workflow. Moving that evaluation behind Azure provisioning turns it into a deliberate procurement decision — one that smaller teams may simply skip rather than formalize.

What To Do Now

If you’re an existing GitHub Models user, there’s no urgency today — but it’s worth starting the conversation about migration timing. GitHub has committed to sharing more details before any final cutoff.

If you’re new to the AI model experimentation space and were considering GitHub Models as a starting point, Azure AI Foundry is the path forward. It’s worth spending time with the documentation before assuming the migration is straightforward. The functionality is there; the setup is more involved.

The broader pattern is one we’ve seen before: free developer tools that lower the barrier to entry eventually get folded into commercial platform offerings. GitHub Models did its job — it introduced a generation of developers to multi-model experimentation. Now, Microsoft is moving those developers to the platform where it can actually monetize that usage.

GitHub has begun winding down GitHub Models, the free AI model playground it introduced in 2024.
