Amazon Web Services (AWS) this week made available, via an early access program, an iOS application<\/a> through which application developers can start sessions and approve changes made by the Kiro AI coding tool the cloud service provider created.<\/p>\n

Announced at the AWS New York Summit<\/a>, the iOS application provides all the management capabilities provided by the Kiro Web application on smartphone or tablet to eliminate the need to manage sessions via a PC.<\/p>\n

Darko Mesaros, a principal developer advocate for AWS, said the capability will become significantly more relevant as long-running tasks are assigned to multiple AI agents that application developers will need to supervise. The goal is to provide developers with an application that more easily enables them to manage AI agents from anywhere, he added.<\/p>\n

Developers can create a session, connect to repositories from GitHub, select a model, and then send a message to an AI agent. The iOS application provides three different means for interacting with Kiro, starting with a chat interface. There are also options for managing workflows based on the specification-driven framework that AWS has developed and delegating tasks for an autonomous AI agent to complete.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the status of pull requests and code reviews can be checked at a glance, while files that highlight differentials render as native\/green cards with file headers to make code legible and scannable on a small screen.<\/p>\n

Any sessions started from the Kiro web application will also appear automatically with the same identity, same preferences, and same models in the iOS application.<\/p>\n

While most AI coding tools make it simpler to write code, AWS is now also focusing on streamlining tasks that historically required application developers to devote more time to manage, said Mesaros. That approach not only automates the writing of code, but also frees up more time for application developers to think through how an application should actually be constructed, he added.<\/p>\n

AWS has not yet decided if it will provide an application that also runs natively on Android, but depending on customer feedback will consider it at a later date, said Mesaros.<\/p>\n

Mitch Ashley, vice president and practice lead for software lifecycle management for the Futurum Group, said the agentic development bottleneck has moved from writing code to supervising the agents that write it. A mobile approval capability ensures that autonomous sessions do not stall, without requiring developers and software engineers to walk through the airport with a laptop open to manage running agents, he added. The danger is a one-tap approval on a small screen is where verification degrades into rubber-stamping, said Ashley.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not clear how much code being created today using AI coding tools actually makes it into a production environment. The one thing that is apparent is that AWS is building out a system of AI agents that in addition to writing code are able to review and fix code<\/a> before autonomously deploying it<\/a>. The challenge is that as agentic software engineering continues to evolve, DevOps teams will need to address a range of complex workflow issues that ultimately require humans to resolve.<\/p>\n
