This article examines how a Carbon-Aware DevOps strategy can help optimize CI\/CD pipelines for sustainability by reducing their carbon footprint while also decreasing costs and meeting the increasing demand for innovative, eco-friendly solutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">Understanding the Problem<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"134245418\":true,\"134245529\":true,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":0}'>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Today\u2019s organizations take advantage of CI\/CD pipelines to streamline and accelerate their software delivery. However, these CI\/CD pipelines can become a hindrance to sustainability because of the resources required to create, build, test and ultimately deploy software into production.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Typically, CI\/CD pipelines run tens of thousands of automated builds, tests and deployments daily, thereby consuming significant compute and energy resources. If you don\u2019t take the steps necessary to reduce the emissions generated by these software applications as they scale, they can seriously undermine your organization\u2019s sustainability initiatives over time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">What is Carbon-Aware DevOps?<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"134245418\":true,\"134245529\":true,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":0}'>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carbon-Aware DevOps is the practice of implementing and creating CI\/CD pipelines in an organization\u00a0to\u00a0reduce carbon emissions, balance sustainability\u00a0objectives\u00a0and forecast carbon consumption in real-time.\u00a0It is\u00a0an evolution of traditional DevOps\u00a0that\u00a0includes\u00a0the ability to manage CI\/CD\u00a0pipelines\u00a0based on the amount of carbon they produce, including carbon-aware scheduling,\u00a0telemetry\u00a0and intelligent orchestration of CI\/CD workflows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carbon-Aware DevOps and Green DevOps are separate but complementary approaches that help reduce the environmental impact of software. <a href=\"https:\/\/devops.com\/how-far-are-we-from-truly-sustainable-devops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Green DevOps aims to reduce total energy consumption through architecture and pipeline efficiency<\/a>, while Carbon-Aware DevOps\u00a0modifies\u00a0how workloads are executed based on real-time incident data\u00a0regarding\u00a0the availability of renewable\u00a0green\u00a0energy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">How\u00a0Does\u00a0it\u00a0Work?<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"134245418\":true,\"134245529\":true,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":0}'>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carbon-Aware DevOps works by adding a carbon-based decision layer to the CI\/CD pipeline, enabling it to build, test and deploy workloads when emissions are at their lowest. While digital transformation has enabled us to provision and deploy more resources than ever before,\u00a0it\u00a0has also placed heavy daily workloads on an organization\u2019s cloud infrastructure.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Traditional CI\/CD pipelines often consume substantial cloud resources. DevOps automation processes and practices for building, testing and deploying software applications consume significant energy. data-ccp-props='{\"134245418\":true,\"134245529\":true,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":0}'>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">There are three criteria to consider when\u00a0determining\u00a0whether your workload is\u00a0an appropriate target\u00a0for carbon-aware scheduling:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li
